CHARACTER COUNTS

This year as part of East Coventry’s “Keeping it Green” initiative, we are introducing the Character Counts program to our school.  Character Counts is a character education program that focuses on the six pillars of character. 

• Trustworthiness
• Respect
• Responsibility
• Fairness
• Caring
• Citizenship

During this past month the focus has been on the “respect” pillar and what it means to the students at East Coventry.  This has also been the topic of a lot of discussion in my lessons in first grade.  We’ve discussed what respect means and how to treat others and yourself with respect.  Student can show respect to their teachers by listening and raising their hand to speak in class.  Students can show respect to their friends by being helpful and playing fairly.  As your son or daughter how they show respect at home!

This past month all teachers and faculty at school were looking for students who went “above and beyond” showing respect to their peers.  When a student was caught showing respect they received a Courtesy Card and were entered into the Respect Raffle.  The winners will be drawn this week.  I am very happy with the amount of Courtesy Cards that students earned, it is GREAT to see the kids at East Coventry showing respect! 

The next pillar I will focus on is Trustworthiness.  Being trustworthy means:

• Be honest
• Don’t deceive, cheat or steal
• Be reliable-do what you say you’ll do.
• Have the courage to do the right thing
• Build a good reputation
• Be loyal-stand by your family and friends

We will discuss how being honest and loyal helps you become both a good friend AND a good student.
